Pain at the very back of your jaw is often a wisdom tooth that's stuck, partly through the gum, or infected. Call (507) 555-0142 and we hold a same-day appointment at our office in Tracy, Minnesota. One of our dentists finds out what's causing the pain, calms the infection if there is one, and explains whether the tooth should come out.
The $539.47 figure is an estimated maximum, not a fixed fee. It covers a limited emergency exam, one dental X-ray and a CBCT (3D) scan if the dentist needs one. Your actual charge depends on the imaging you need, and a CBCT scan is not always necessary. Treatment is charged separately and explained before any work starts.

Signs your wisdom tooth needs attention today
- Swollen, sore gum behind your last molar
- Pain that spreads to your ear or down your neck
- Trouble opening your mouth all the way
- A bad taste or smell from the back of your mouth
- Pain when you bite, or food trapped under a flap of gum
- Swelling in your cheek or under your jaw, sometimes with a fever
When swelling makes it hard to swallow or breathe, or keeps spreading down your neck, go straight to the emergency department at Sanford Tracy Medical Center.

What happens at your same-day visit
The exam and X-ray show where the wisdom tooth sits, how it's angled and whether it's pushing on the molar in front. Lower wisdom teeth often sit near the nerve that gives feeling to your lip and chin. A CBCT scan shows that nerve in 3D, so the dentist can plan safely.
The most common problem is an infection in the gum flap over a partly erupted tooth. The dentist cleans out the trapped food and bacteria under the flap and may prescribe medicine. That usually brings relief within a day or two. But the infection tends to come back while the tooth stays, so the dentist will talk with you about wisdom tooth extraction, either the same day or once the swelling is down.

Frequently asked questions
Does every wisdom tooth have to come out?
No. A wisdom tooth that grows in straight, can be kept clean and doesn't cause trouble can often stay. Teeth that keep getting infected, damage the tooth in front or are stuck in the bone are the ones usually removed.
Can I wait for the pain to go away?
It might fade, but gum infections around wisdom teeth tend to return, often worse. If you have swelling, trouble opening your mouth or a fever, call (507) 555-0142 for a same-day time.
What helps tonight?
Rinse with warm salt water after eating to flush the area, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs. A cold pack on the cheek can ease swelling. Avoid chewing on that side. If swelling spreads, go to the hospital. More on toothache relief.
